Students recognised at IoD prize giving

Students who have been shadowing local businessmen and women this year have been recognised for their hard work.

Over 100 students, business representatives, community leaders, parents and teachers attended a prize giving at the Grand Jersey where certificates and awards were presented to 53 students who took part in this year’s IoD Work Shadowing scheme, sponsored by KPMG Channel Islands.

Each year, the students’ CVs, application letters, interviews and reports of their work shadowing experience are assessed, with prizes being awarded to the students who impressed most and submitted the best reports.

This year, the overall prize was awarded to Jessica Toudic from Hautlieu School, who shadowed Duncan Gibaut in the Chief Minister’s Department. As well as receiving her award as being the overall winner and submitting the best report, she also received a cheque for £200.

In addition, four students were highly commended for their reports each receiving an award and £50. They were Charlotte Bisson of Jersey College for Girls, who shadowed David Le Heuze in the Judicial Greffe; Angelique Ison of Jersey College for Girls, who shadowed Paul Marett at Jersey Post; Charlotte Pollard of Jersey College for Girls, who shadowed Senator Philip Ozouf in the Chief Minister’s Department; and Ben Chadwick of De La Salle College, who shadowed Mike Newton at State Street.

Commenting in her report, Miss Toudic said: “The best aspect of the scheme was the shadowing itself; although the application and interview process were extremely valuable experiences, the shadowing taught me the most. Experiencing the job of a manager first hand is something that has given me insight I would never be able to gain again in any other situation.”

Shelley Kendrick, Chair of the IoD Jersey Education and Training Sub-Committee, said: “To have had more than 50 students take part in this unique scheme this year was fantastic, and they and all the directors and senior managers who hosted them deserve recognition.  The judging panel were once gain really impressed by the exceptional and well written applications and reports which were received.  We had some outstanding reports which is why we decided to award one overall winner and recognise four highly commended students this year.”

This year marks the 30^thanniversary of the IoD Jersey’s Work Shadow Scheme, supported by Careers Jersey and sponsored by KPMG Channel Islands. It provides a means for predominantly Year 12 students to experience a week shadowing a senior Director in order to get a taste for a business career. The 2017 Scheme will get under way again in January, when presentations will be held for Sixth Forms at schools across Jersey.
