A senior manager at HSBC in the Channel Islands has played a key role in a new initiative to improve its services for transgender customers.

Stuart Barette, who works at HSBC in Jersey, is the Trans Lead of HSBC’s UK Pride Network and the Bank says he helped to launch a number of new facilities aimed at offering transgender customers a better service.

These services include streamlining of the experience for those who wish to change their gender on their bank account and the introduction of ten new gender neutral titles, which will be applied across a customer’s account including bank cards and correspondence.

Details of the initiative were announced to coincide with the recent International Transgender Day of Visibility, when Mr Barette was the official spokesperson for the Bank.

Mr Barette featured in a video on HSBC UK’s YouTube Channel.

Mr Barette, who is also Chair of ‘Engage’ for HSBC Channel Islands and Isle of Man, the HSBC employee group promoting inclusion for all, said: “Coming out is hard in itself, but coming out in such an official manner to your banking branch is even more difficult. That’s why HSBC in the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man have added ten extra gender-neutral titles to its forms, to make everyone feel included and accepted, and have been providing special training to all of its staff regarding LGBT diversity.

“My personal experience was a terrifying prospect, but thankfully very smooth in reality. I would like every person to have an equally pleasant and inclusive experience, which is why it’s important for the Bank to acknowledge the social diversity that exists these days and celebrate all of our customers.”
