Cruise ship passengers will get a musical welcome as they set out to explore the streets of St Peter Port this summer, with help from retailer Waitrose and BATIF, Guernsey Post’s foreign exchange service.

The cruise ship season will see more than 170,000 visitors come to the island by the end of October.

This sponsorship enables the Town Centre Partnership to pay acts to perform for three hours on days when there are over 3000 cruise passengers visiting Guernsey, which happens on 26 days throughout the 2017 season.

The best of ‘Guernsey’s Got Talent’ will be on display for the cruise passengers; Mick Le Huray, James Dumbelton, Lydia Pugh and Chris Taylor are among the mixture of local musicians who will perform a variety of musical genres outside Pier 17 on the Albert Pier when the passengers arrive and depart throughout the season.

Mick Le Huray is a longstanding member of the folk music scene in the Channel Islands and released his first solo album in the last year and James Dumbelton is known for teaching traditional folk music. Lydia Pugh enjoys tailoring voice to contemporary folk and jazz genres and Chris Taylor prefers using his acoustic guitar to play a range of genres including jazz, pop and blues.

Jack Honeybill, executive officer at the Town Centre Partnership, said: “Generous sponsorship like this allows us to showcase the amazing, local, musical talent we have to visitors and residents alike.

The Town Centre Partnership works to promote and maintain the vitality and amenities of the island in particular focusing on the town of St Peter Port.”

Ian Burdekin, branch manager of Waitrose Admiral Park, said: “The Island has so much musical talent to be proud of and showcasing this to the community and to those visiting the island is very important.  It’s a great way to welcome new visitors to the island during cruise ship season and, you never know who might be on board the cruise ships – they could bring our musicians’ dreams to life!”

Dawn Gallienne, Guernsey Post, said: “We are delighted to be able to support this initiative again this year. It’s a great opportunity to show off Guernsey’s musical talents and warmly welcome visitors to our Island.”
