As of Monday (16th January) the Job Centre will be offering jobseekers an introduction to careers in care. The “Prepare to Care” course is being run in partnership with the College of Further Education with tutoring provided by the College Health and Social Care Department.

The course will offer training for up to 10 participants over 3 weeks. The participants will have classroom training and a hands-on placement within a care home. After completing the course participants will gain relevant qualifications and experience. Job Centre Manager, Martin Bridle said “We always aim to pair skills development with practical experience. Once participants finish the course they should have everything they need to show potential employers that they are knowledgeable and dependable employees.”

The Job Centre has recently held the first of a number of recruitment drives for Green Acres Care Home. The new home, which is due to open on 1st February, offers 47 specialist care beds for dementia patients. The combination of the Prepare to Care course and the potential for a Kickstart placement, will help to support the opening of the new home which is seeking to recruit 57 positions by the time it opens.

Committee for Employment & Social Security President, Deputy Michelle Le Clerc said “We’re very pleased to be able to run this course in partnership with the College of Further Education. It’s just one of the fantastic programs the Job Centre runs to support jobseekers back into work. As Guernsey’s population ages we will need more and more care providers. This course will benefit the 10 participants and the island as a whole.”
