Cannabis worth £500,000 seized

Customs officers have stopped a car full of drugs getting into the Island.

A 41-year-old man and 36-year-old woman from London have been charged with importing the drugs with a street value of £500,000.

They were caught coming off the ferry from Poole on Friday 11 December. Officers found around 30 kilos of the drug hidden in a smuggling compartment of their UK registered vehicle.

Director of Law Enforcement Mark Cockerham said: “This was a routine examination of arriving passengers by Officers working at the ports.

"Car concealments are often a preferred method when smugglers import larger amounts of drugs because of the sheer bulk involved and some of these concealments are quite sophisticated. However, our Officers receive specialised training in the UK which includes car examination and combined with the use of our drug detector dogs this provides an effective way to detect these sort of smuggling attempts."

Customs and Immigration have seized drugs worth £2.3m so far this year.
