Crash driver has "astounding" escape

Sunday 12 February 2017

Jersey's emergency services were left amazed that no one was seriously injured in a nasty car crash at Georgetown this weekend.

The police believe a silver Renault Clio was driving from the Tunnel through to Georgetown just after 01:00 on Sunday when it smashed into the wall of the garage, and then came to rest in the middle of the road.

The Police closed the road, while Fire Fighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the car door to free the driver - who sustained only minor injuries.

He was still taken to hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.

There was only car involved in the smash, and the police are now appealing for witnesses, particularly any other drivers who may have 'dash-cam' footage, or who saw how it was being driven before the crash.

Watch Commander Andy Gallie said: “Given the high energy of this impact and the damage sustained to the vehicle, it’s astounding that this incident didn’t result in serious injury or even fatality. This is the second consecutive weekend which crews from Jersey Fire and Rescue have attended serious collisions, and on both occasions the vehicle occupants have been extraordinarily fortunate to walk away relatively unharmed.”
