Go back in time at the Fort

A new collection of medieval inspired artwork is going on show at Fort Regent this weekend.

The Arcane Exhibition is the work of three young local artists who together have produced a mélange of illustration, painting and sculpture.

Will Bertram, Josh Bale and Sam Bullock who all have a shared passion for illustration met at the Kartoon Factory.

Will said: “Sam and myself started looking at medieval illustration and quickly expanded on the medieval theme, looking at the occult and rituals of the time as well as looking at Jersey’s history.

“We both knew Josh from working together in the illustration studio at Kartoon Factory and knew his style would fit well. We asked him if he would be interested in a collaborative exhibition and he quickly agreed.

“We each tackle illustration differently, Josh being very delicate, creating highly-detailed fantasy landscapes which appear quite traditional with a contemporary twist to them.

Sam’s work is a bit more surreal, depicting desolate landscapes and crumbling temples inhabited with strange figures using bold but meticulous line work. Sam’s method and medium is similar to my own however I look more at the occult and ritualistic side of medieval lore.

“I like to incorporate sculpture into my work, either drawing my sculptures or sculpting my drawings. We hope although our work has similarities, the way each of us has responded to the theme has created an interesting and unique body of work which will fit well within the Fort Regent gallery space."

Fort Regent’s Event Manager Emma Turner said: “Since the Gallery opened in July last year we have been extremely fortunate in attracting some very diverse works and the Arcane Exhibition is no exception.

“The artworks are all different but also create a connection between them; they are also very emotive inviting the viewer to form an opinion.”

The gallery space at the Fort is offered free to local artists.

Will said: "The Fort is opened minded to how the space can be used and it’s given our group an opportunity to exhibit professionally. We’re really excited to see how it goes."

The exhibition runs for a month.
