More and more Islanders are doing their banking on their mobiles – NatWest say the amount of people using their app doubled last year and they are expecting to see the same sort of growth again in 2014.
Their offshore app for customers with accounts in Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar has had over 460,000 log ins in the last 30 days.
The bank was the first to provide mobile banking for smartphones in the Island and there have been two million transactions since the launch of their first mobile app in 2011.
A report by the British Bankers’ Association published this week shows that customers are now making more than 5.7 million transactions a day using smartphones and other internet-enabled technology.
The busiest branch of RBS in the UK is now the “virtual one” with over £30 million transferred every day through their mobile banking app.
NatWest’s Head of Products and Marketing Jerry Whitsey said: “Our experience in the Channel Islands reflects the trends evidenced in the UK also. By placing the power to manage their money in their hands, our mobile banking service is transforming the way our customers do their banking. At the touch of a button personal and business customers can check their balance, transfer money between accounts, view their transaction history or pay their contacts.
“There will always be a place for traditional banking, where branch and telephone teams and relationship managers are on hand to meet with customers and discuss their specific needs. However, for everyday transactions, banking has changed beyond recognition and technology is driving this trend.”
