Jersey kids get better grades and more passes - but fewer stay in school

Jersey’s students are likely to pass more exams and get better grades than those in the UK – but they’re less likely to stay in college after GCSE’s or get the highest A Level results, according to a report out today.

The Education department has been going through last year’s A Level results to get a better picture of what’s going on in the colleges and at Highlands.

Among their findings are:

• More students stay on to do some kind of studying after GCSEs in the UK than here.
• On average, pupils in Jersey do better than those in the UK, whether they’re doing academic or vocational studies.
• There are more top achievers at A Level in the UK than there are here, by a small margin.
• There are fewer young people going into vocational education here than in the UK.

The work is the first time that the Education department has had a proper statistical analysis of exam results and participation. The work will be repeated in future years so that the department can monitor trends and see if the patterns change.

Among the other findings were that girls did better than boys at A Level, that “accounting and finance” were the top vocational study areas, and that English was the most popular A Level subject.
