Dandara to build new flats at Beaumont?

Beaumont could be in for a makeover if Dandara’s plans to rejuvenate the area go ahead.

The Channel Islands Co-operative Society has announced plans to sell the former Total Sport warehouse, which closed in 2015, and the surrounding buildings to the property development company.

Dandara have proposed plans to develop the site into a residential area that would consist of three buildings of one and two bedroom apartments over a semi-basement parking area. Their purchase of the site will be subject to the Planning Department approving their designs.

The current buildings, which the Channel Islands Co-operative Society has owned since 1950, are unoccupied and the Co-op says the buildings have reached the end of their life as shops and warehouses. 

The Society’s CEO, Colin Macleod said: “The former Total Sport site and the surrounding buildings have reached the end of their life as a useful retail space, and we are pleased that Dandara is in a position to invest in the significant regeneration of the Beaumont site.

"As part of the plans, which we hope Islanders will take the time to view, a number of existing traffic conflicts that currently affect the site will be solved, which will be a huge advantage to the local residents. The Society remains committed to the Locale site and supports the reinvestment in this popular area.”

The parking area outside of the former Total Sport building will remain for customers of the Locale store to use. Whilst the existing buildings, with the exception of the German bakery, will be demolished. The original German bakery that was constructed during the Occupation and is of historical interest, will be refurbished into a replacement commercial unit.

Martin Clancy, Dandara’s Managing Director, said: “Our development proposals provide the opportunity to replace the current dilapidated retail and warehouse buildings with a high quality residential development that will bring significant improvements to the local area.  In formulating our plans, we have held positive consultations with representatives of both the Tenants of the Marsh of St Peter and the States of Jersey Property Holdings department and we are extremely encouraged by their support."

Dandara is inviting Islanders to attend a public exhibition to view its plans, which they say will significantly regenerate the site together with the surrounding area, before they are submitted to the Planning Department. 

The public exhibition will take place on 1 March between 12.00 and 18:00 at the former Total Sport building.
