The students, drawn from different schools and charities across the Island have attended workshops focusing on money, people and work skills.

The sessions are delivered by staff volunteers from Barclays, with more than 60 of the Bank’s employees involved.

The most recent sessions were held at Jersey College for Girls and Victoria College where Barclays’ employees led several workshops covering personal impact and general money skills.

LifeSkills, created with Barclays, is a major initiative designed to help young people aged 11-19 make the transition from education to employment and develop the skills employers seek in new recruits. The programme gives young people access to the advice, support and opportunities they need and aims to build confidence and leadership in three key areas: work skills, people skills and money skills.

As well as the workshop sessions run by the Barclays staff, the free programme includes lesson plans for teachers and interactive online content both for students and parents.

The scheme has already helped 1.1 million young people across the UK develop employability skills and over 13,000 Barclays employees have signed up to volunteer.

Paul Savery, Managing Director for Barclays in the Channel Islands and one of the volunteers at the JCG sessions, said: “It’s fantastic that we have been able to extend the programme to even more Jersey schools and charities this year. With first-hand experience and training, our volunteers bridge the gap between theory and practice and help to build the students’ skills and confidence.”

“The variety of skills which these sessions explore are crucial for work success. At Barclays we want to make sure that Jersey’s young people are prepared for the world of work.”
