Launched in 2021, the initiative aims to offer a sustainable solution to plugging gaps in the workforce by making the most of local talent.

Including traineeships, apprenticeships, and internships, it offers participants the opportunity to gain professional qualifications, hands-on experience, and practical expertise across a wide range of disciplines, bridging the gap between education and professional experience.

Welcome aboard the team

Two apprentices and one trainee joined this summer.

James Le Mains, joining as a Group Technical Services Trainee, is embarking on a journey that involves six months of rotation through various technical service sectors before honing his skills as an apprentice in a specialized trade.

Jared Dingle, a computer studies student, is returning to Ports as an IT Apprentice, building on the success of his 20-week placement in 2022.

Adam Hart, who previously served as a Maritime Trainee with extensive exposure to Coastguard operations and offshore workboats, is now charting his course as a Maritime Apprentice while working towards achieving his Yacht Master qualification.

Summer interns

During the summer, Ports of Jersey also opened its doors to two interns.

Tessa Azuelos, a Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering student at the University of Glasgow, joined the Air Traffic Engineering team for a six-week internship.

Reflecting on her contribution, Air Traffic Engineering Service Delivery Manager, Carlo Galluzzi, said: “She showed her aptitude for engineering with a quick grasp of the concepts and problems we encounter day-to-day, developing a very hands-on approach to help solve issues using test equipment, spreadsheets, and mental maths to impress those around her.”

Blaise Eygun, a Mechanical Engineering student at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, was an intern with the Planning Engineering team for three months.

She said: “I think internships are great for a company like Ports of Jersey because they allow them to bring in someone with fresh ideas and a different perspective, which has a positive impact on the company while providing the intern with the opportunity to learn and develop their skills.”
