Ports of Jersey has been recognised for its sustainability efforts by being awarded the EcoPorts Port Environmental Review System (PERS) certification.
To achieve the certification, the organisation underwent an assessment of how it managed environmental responsibilities, engaged with the community and stakeholders and “continuously improved” operations.
EcoPorts is managed by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) and the only environmental management standard created “by ports, for ports”.
It is independently verified by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) and the certification is valid for two years.
Ports of Jersey said PERS went beyond general standards like ISO 14001 and tackled the specific environmental challenges ports face every day. The certification was a “proud moment for everyone” and placed it among a “growing network of European ports working together to raise the bar for environmental performance”.
“I’m delighted that Ports of Jersey has received the EcoPorts PERS certification,” said Captain William Sadler, Jersey Harbour Master.
“This award reflects our team’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable port operations. It’s the result of ongoing investment, collaboration, and a shared vision for a greener future for Jersey’s maritime sector.”
Tim Verhoeven, EcoPorts Coordinator (ESPO) added: “We are thrilled to congratulate Ports of Jersey on achieving its first EcoPorts PERS certification. This recognition highlights their strong commitment to environmental management and sustainable port operations.
“By meeting the rigorous standards of the Port Environmental Review System, Ports of Jersey joins a network of leading European ports dedicated to sharing knowledge, raising environmental standards and working together for a greener future.”
