The Guernsey Police Centenary Event has been postponed by the Head of Law Enforcement in response to latest advice on combating the coronavirus pandemic.

Head of Law Enforcement Ruari Hardy said it was important for Guernsey Police to be concentrating on their responsibilities for ensuring that the Bailiwick remains safe and secure, and supporting the Director of Public Health and other emergency service colleagues with the collective response.

The Centenary Event, scheduled for the 21st of April 2020, would have seen the entire Police Service, together with a large number of retired Officers, including pensioners, as well as anumberoftheIsland’sCivicDignitaries, gatheredtogetherinTownChurchforaservice. This is contrary to the best advice from the Director of Public Health and, in addition, could potentially be taking place during one of the busiest times for emergency services.

Ruari Hardy, Head of Law Enforcement, said:

“It is with regret that this event has been postponed, but it has been so on the basis that this Organisation’s first responsibility is to the people of Guernsey. If we are in the middle of a public health emergency, it would not be appropriate for Guernsey Police to hold this event at this time. I wish to apologise to all those who were looking forward to the day, but I can confirm that a date in the autumn has been identified to hold the event. We are provisionally looking at Monday 12th October 2020 to host our 100 year centenary event. Guernsey Police will be making contact with everyone in due course to ensure that they are aware of what the arrangements are going forward. Once again, I wish to apologise for any inconvenience caused, however I am sure that you will understand the necessity to make this decision at an early stage.”
