Our young people are missing out on feeling connected to some of our islands dynamic and vital industries because they simply do not know about them. The Cultivate programme aims to cultivate an interest in environmental stewardship, our farming heritage, local produce, modern day farming and fishing, animal breeding, seasonality and the provenance of our local food, growing crops and the beauty of plants and flowers. We hope to also cultivate connection and meaning because if you understand something, the more likely you are to care for it.
Cultivate Young Minds 2019 was our first event in our Cultivate Programme. The event which involved 70 teenagers from across the Island’s secondary schools, was held here at the Showground on April 2nd 2019. The event aims were to build on, and collaborate with, the many excellent initiatives under way in the island at present to integrate Agri-Food into the school curriculum and to drive a greater interest in the sector as a career option.
