Following updates to the Fire Precautions Law (Jersey) in 2012, Amalgamated Facilities Management (AFM) is urging businesses to make sure their fire alarm systems are safe and comply with regulations.
Working closely with major UK fire alarm suppliers, the local facilities management company is helping to protect its client base from the potential risk of fires, and has recently installed new fire alarm systems at a number of prestigious hotel properties and financial services companies in Jersey.
AFM project manager Nigel Errington, said that as fire system designers and installers, AFM is committed to making sure its clients have the appropriate system for the job at hand, and any design or installation is approved and compliant with all relevant British standards.
"Fire can devastate families and businesses alike, and it is not at all discriminatory as to where or when it starts. Ensuring you have an adequately designed fire-safe building and a means of detecting fire at an early stage helps to reduce the impact a fire can have," he said.
"The systems that we install have the latest technology, which makes them more reliable. We have to design systems to reduce the likelihood of false alarms without reducing its ability to detect fire. Unwanted false alarms cost money, not just for the business owner but also for those who have to respond to the alarm. This saves valuable emergency services time and gives the added assurance to both staff and members of the public that if the system does activate it is more probable that it has done so for a valid reason."
Having obtained the British Approvals for Fire Equipment (BAFE) SP203-1 Fire Detection and Alarm Systems accreditation from the Security Systems & Alarms Inspection Board, AFM is able to provide evidence of their ability, expertise and competency.
"AFM is well equipped to deal with any enquiries relating to fire alarm systems upgrades, and offer ongoing planned maintenance of both new and existing systems. We are proud of the professionalism that our team demonstrated during the BAFE accreditation, which along with the fantastic relationships we share with our suppliers, makes us one of the Channel Islands’ most qualified fire alarm specialists," added AFM Jersey’s general manager Philip Le Claire.
