The Brick Foundation, the charitable arm of the Jersey Construction Council, (JeCC), have this week completed an extensive refurbishment of the toilet facilities in Dodo Cafe at Durrell Wildlife Park.
The £55,000 project, which commenced on the 5th January, has been a collaborative effort from several leading construction firms on the island who have donated their time, resources and materials heavily discounted or free of charge to give back to the community.
The new facilities will improve the infrastructure of the Park in time for the new tourist season. Durrell does not receive public funding and is financially supported by income generated from events, conferences and weddings, which help fund their conservation work. Many premium bookings have been lost in recent years due to a lack of adequate facilities on site, so the upgrade to the Dodo Café will help Durrell tap into the market.
Steve Jewell, Chairman of the Brick Foundation said: "This is the largest scale project the Foundation have been involved with and our members have been enormously supportive in lending their time, resources and labour to make this project a reality. This is the industry at its best, working shoulder-to-shoulder with competitors to dig in and give something back to the community. The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust needs visitors and private event bookings to help with running costs so they can continue with their important work preserving our natural world, and this is the most practical way we could help. I am proud of our work here at Durrell and hope it goes a considerable way to pouring much needed funds into the Park."
Mark Brayshaw, Wildlife Park Manager, said: "We are extremely grateful for the efforts of the Brick Foundation in renewing our Dodo Cafe. Private events and tourism are the lifeblood of the Park, which in turn supports our conservation work in protecting endangered species across the globe. Our founder’s vision was to create a wildlife charity that would last for generations, and the upgrade to our facilities will provide us with the means to carry on his legacy for years to come."
The new facilities will be open to the public on 27th February.
