Chief Minister launches the 2015 Jersey Construction Awards

Wednesday 25 March 2015

The 11th Jersey Construction Awards have been launched. Marking the launch, Chief Minister Ian Gorst spoke of the importance of the construction industry as a key employer of the Island’s workforce and cornerstone of the economy.

He said: “We need new and refurbished homes for Islanders and we need Grade A office space to accommodate the businesses that power our economy. The construction industry is providing both, while also working in partnership with government to run schemes that train islanders in the skills needed by the industry.”

This year’s keynote speaker, Miles Hilton-Barber, was also announced. Miles is a blind adventurer and motivational speaker who has set numerous world records including recently running across the Gobi Desert. His appearance will be sponsored by recruitment firm HR Now.

"I am honoured to speak at the Jersey Construction Awards. I have always stood by the principle that attitude determines attitude," said Mr Hilton-Barber, "and that rings true in every aspect of our lives. I look forward to sharing the life-lessons and tales of my adventures at what looks to be an exciting event."

The Jersey Construction Council welcomes two new judges to the Awards panel, featuring business leaders from a range of industries. Graeme Smith, Chief Executive of Jersey Business, and Tammy Fage, Director of the Health and Safety Inspectorate, will be among those judging this year’s awards. The two new judges will be joining Mike King, CEO of Economic Development Department, Andrew Scate CEO of Environmental Department and Professor Ed Sallis OBE. The gala event, which has become a prominent fixture of the Island’s business calendar, returns to the Hotel De France on the 10 October.

The JeCC is pleased to also welcome two new sponsors; Comprop as a new Gold Sponsor for the Business of the Year category and Ogier as a new Silver Sponsor for the Health and Safety Award.

Awards Chairman David Morris said: “The JeCC is committed to building on the success of each year’s event and this launch ceremony has set the tone for the Awards, capturing the excitement and sense of occasion that we have come to expect from the industry’s flagship event. With new judges and Sponsors, there is certainly a cause for celebration, with strong signs of growth in our sector”.

Closing date for all nominations is Wednesday 29 April. Nomination forms are available to download on the JeCC website www.jerseyconstruction.org.
