The Jersey Institute of Directors’s Digital Subcommittee collaborated with the Jersey Financial Services Commission, the Jersey Cyber Security Centre, and BDO to discuss cyber and information security at its latest breakfast event.
Hosted by Ian Webb, Chair of the Digital Subcommittee, the event gathered business leaders and board members to discuss real case studies and how to recognise and mitigate risks.
Mr Webb described cyber incidents as not an “if” scenario, but a “when” – and said that IoD members should “challenge themselves to contemplate information and cyber security risks as seriously as other risk areas”.
Senior leaders of the JFSC’s risk management and IT teams highlighted the need for “collaboration with stakeholders” like the JCSC, JOIC in fighting cybercrime, using a real incident from January 2024 as a point of reference.
Presentations from BDO and Matt Palmer, Director of the JCSC, reiterated that directors must have the skills and knowledge to “effectively plan and prepare for when a cyber threat becomes a real attack, or a security incident escalates”.
Audience members could pose questions to the panel, moderated by IoD Jersey Chair, Alex Ruddy.
IoD Jersey said: “It became clear that a fundamental mitigant is education and development, recognising that human error can play a significant role.
“Further the appreciation of risk by the board and leadership team should not be underestimated.”
Mr Webb added: “I was delighted that JFSC, JCSC and BDO agreed to collaborate with the Digital Subcommittee in relation to this event.
“I have had fantastic feedback from participants and the IoD commit, via my subcommittee, to ensure we engage with members in relation to this important topic via further events and information.”
