Hopes that global privacy conference will bring a tourism boost

Friday 27 October 2023

Jersey's hospitality sector may get a welcome boost in the quieter autumn months next year after the island was chosen to host a major international conference.

The 2024 Global Privacy Assembly Annual Meeting could see delegates from 138 data protection authorities visit from around the world.

Jersey Information Commissioner Paul Vane (pictured top), who oversees data protection in the Island, said: “I am honoured and extremely proud that my office, and our Island, has been selected.” He added: “While this is primarily a data protection and privacy conference, this is a real opportunity to showcase Jersey and everything our Island has to offer.”

Tricia Warwick, Visit Jersey CEO, said: “Jersey is a remarkable destination that offers the ideal balance of business and leisure, with breathtaking landscapes, incredible food, and exceptional experiences.

“We look forward to showcasing Jersey to conference attendees and welcome this opportunity to raise Jersey’s profile to an international audience.”

Economic Development Minister Kirsten Morel said: “By hosting the conference, the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner is demonstrating not only its commitment to fostering the very highest standards of data protection for Islanders, but also enabling a global conversation around its future.”

He added that information privacy was “not just a legal requirement, it’s an essential measure”.

The Global Privacy Assembly Annual Meeting is set to take place from Monday 28 October to Friday 1 November 2024 with events taking place at the Freedom Centre, the Royal Showground and the Radisson Blu Hotel. Sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday will be open to the public.
