Jersey Water has released its preliminary financial results for 2016 with an increased profit before tax of 4.4%, or £4.3million.
Water consumption also increased by 3.7% in 2016, with 7.6billion litres supplied, mainly due to a drier than average summer and connecting new customers.
Despite making a profit, Jersey Water hasn't had an easy year with the discovery of pesticides in Val de la Mare reservoir, and elsewhere, as well as the ongoing pollution from nitrates. In spite of these challenges, the company says the quality of the water it supplied in 2016 remained very high with an overall regulatory compliance rate of 99.99%.
Helier Smith, Jersey Water’s Chief Executive, said: “We are pleased with our financial performance in 2016 and with our water quality results for the year. Both are evidence of the hard work of the team at Jersey Water, who maintained our usual service and quality standards whilst dealing with the issues presented by the poor quality of the water entering our reservoirs."
The States-owned company also invested a total of £4.6million in the Island's water infrastructure with the installation of 1.3 kilometres of new mains, the replacement of 2 kilometres of mains, and 374 new water connections added to the network.
