Living Wage rises

Wednesday 06 January 2021

Jersey's Living Wage - which takes into account the cost of living, taxes and the value of benefits available to working people on low incomes - has increased to £10.96 per hour.

The Living Wage campaign aims to ensure that, on average, a worker receiving the living wage rate, topped up by in-work benefits, earns enough to be able to live with dignity within the Jersey community.

“The Living Wage campaign is focusing on lifting the wages of the lowest paid in our community, who frequently work long hours or take extra jobs just to survive," Jersey Living Wage Campaign Team Leader, Jennifer Bridge, said.

"These are the workers who, through the covid-19 pandemic we now recognise, as a community, as being essential workers. We have witnessed a growing appetite in Jersey to do business ethically and to recognise and value the contribution of all employees. We encourage employers to contact us and start a conversation which will hopefully lead to accreditation."

Caritas Jersey are licensed by the Living Wage Foundation in the UK to accredit employers in Jersey and encourage businesses to sign up to play a part in eradicating poverty in Jersey.

“Despite the pandemic our Living Wage campaign has seen significant interest this year," Caritas Jersey CEO, Patrick Lynch, said.

"We now have 14 firms with Living Wage accreditation and are working with many others to complete their applications. The 2021 rate of £10.96 per hour for Jersey recognises the true cost of living here on the island.”

We fully support the aims and objectives of the Foundation. The payment of a Living Wage not only benefits employees but also contributes to the Island’s economy as a whole."
