Businesses urged to support new plastic-free initiative

Tuesday 10 December 2019

Plastic Free Jersey is inviting local businesses to support their work through the newly formed '200 Club.'

The 200 Club is based on a simple concept - bringing local businesses together who commit to donating a minimum of £200 per year to Plastic Free Jersey.

The funds will go towards the operational costs for Plastic Free Jersey - which brings together individuals, groups, businesses and organisations - as well as curriculum development and events.

It is hoped the 200 Club will enable Plastic Free Jersey to become a ‘mentor island’ in the SAS Parley Cold Water Island Project, helping Jersey become a leader in the ocean advocacy space.

Jersey became a Plastic Free Community last year and with the anniversary just around the corner the team has been reflecting on the momentum they have seen across the island in regards to plastic pollution.

"There is still a lot of work to do, but it’s really encouraging to see change happening and so many people engaged," Plastic Free Jersey Co-founder, Linzi Hawkin, said.

"Our team has worked tirelessly for the last 12 months to raise awareness & educate islanders of all ages about plastic pollution. We’ve formed partnerships with Eco Active, Ports of Jersey, Jersey National Park, Visit Jersey and a large number of local businesses who are passionate about protecting our ocean.

"We’ve run workshops for businesses & schools, built Precious Plastic recycling machines, facilitated design sprints on island and funded 2 local students to attend the Plastic Hackathon in London."

"But so much of the work happens behind the scenes, and we’re a really small team," Ms Hawkin added. "Local businesses often ask how best they can support our cause, and so we’re following in the footsteps of Surfers Against Sewage and creating a 200 Club.’

Members of the club will be invited to a number of exclusive 200 Club events each year. They will also be listed on the Plastic Free Jersey website, get use of the 200 Club logo and receive regular updates on all campaigns.
