The 2020 Lions Swimarathon, sponsored by Ravenscroft, will be started at 9.00 am on Wednesday next, 11 March, by his Excellency Sir Stephen Dalton and Lady Dalton. The Swimarathon, the 49th, will benefit five local charities, each one fulfilling the Lions’ theme of ‘enabling teenagers to thrive’.

The charities are Brighter Futures, Brightly, the Jersey Youth Trust, the Teenage Cancer Trust and YouMatter and 450 teams comprising more than 3,500 swimmers will be swimming to support them and the Lions are hoping that the sponsorship raised will ensure that each charity receives up to £10.000.

“These days teenagers probably face more challenges than they have ever done in an everchanging and socially magnified world,” says the Jersey Lions’ president Lion Mark Godel. “Therefore, we feel it very appropriate that we should support those charities who themselves enable teenagers to thrive in so many different ways. We are also delighted that with the support of our new sponsors Ravenscroft we will be even better placed to benefit a vitally important sector of the community.”

The 2020 Swimarathon takes place from Wednesday to Sunday 11 to 15 March at Les Quennevais Pool and since the first event, held at Fort Regent in 1972, the Swimarathon has raised more than £3.5 million and in the last decade alone has benefited more than 120 local charities.

Haydn Taylor, Ravenscroft’s managing director in Jersey, says: “As the company’s presence in Jersey has grown, so has our commitment to the community. Thus we are delighted to be sponsoring the Swimarathon in 2020, 2021 and 2022 which will be the 50th anniversary of the event. The Swimarathon is one of Jersey’s largest fundraising events and has seen  thousands of Islanders coming together to swim thousands of laps and raise thousands of pounds for local charities.  It’s an incredible event and the team from Ravenscroft will be swimming, helping out and have goodies to hand out to all the teams participating.  We hope everyone taking part has a great time.”
