On Saturday 18 September, 575 runners aged from seven to 70 spent up to an hour working their way around the four kilometre course of the 2021 Lions Muddy Fun Run and in doing so raised more than £10.000.
The event, first staged in 2019 and cancelled in 2020, took place over a revised course over five fields in St Saviour along La Rue de la Parade and featured 19 obstacles ranging from mud pools to climbing walls. The event was started by HE the Lt Governor Sir Stephen Dalton who made a tour of the course, albeit in a 4X4. Weather conditions were ideal and the mud was plentiful.
“The event was a great success, attracting more participants than ever,” says organiser Lion Ian Barette, “And despite a longer course and more obstacles than in 2019, as they finished everyone was smiling although some were so muddy we could only see their teeth! We were also delighted that so many participants took the trouble to tell us how much they had enjoyed themselves.”
The Lions Muddy Fun Run was very much a family event with runners as young as seven years old taking part and a significant donation will be made to the Jersey Child Care Trust once all the expenses incurred to stage the event are known.
“We are very grateful to the landowners, Richard Perchard and Michael Labey, who made their fields available and the Perchard, Mourant and Houzé families for the use of their farm equipment ,” says Lion Ian. “We are also very appreciative of the support of the parish of St Saviour and all those who helped set up the course, Jersey Water for providing a very welcome bowser of fresh water as the runners finished and the Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club who provided the walkie talkies to enable us to maintain constant contact with the course marshals.”
Lion Bill Harris, president of the Lions Club of Jersey, says, ”This was a great event community event obviously enjoyed by everyone who took part. They have all helped us raise a significant amount of money and truly played their part in helping the Lions put the fun into fundraising. My warm thanks too, to the Lions team who worked very hard to make this such a success.”
