Applicants of all ages are invited to apply for the 2014 Jersey Clipper Bursary – a cash award aimed at furthering maritime endeavour.
The bursary is designed to assist an Islander to achieve a particular nautical ambition. This could be a trip on a tall ship, participation in a watersports competition, undertaking a marine biology field trip or competing in an ocean race – anything with a maritime theme.
The annual award, a legacy from the three Jersey campaigns in the Clipper Round-the-World Race, was established in 2007 through the generosity of Dandara, Les Pas Holdings and UBS. Further funding to ensure the future of the award was recently provided by local boat-owner Nigel Philpott and the Island’s three former Harbourmasters – Capt Roy Bullen, Capt Brian Nibbs and Capt Howard Le Cornu.
The 2014 winner will follow in the wake of the most successful Jersey sailor in the 2013 Jeux des Iles in Corsica, 15-year-old Elana St George (right)(, who was awarded the 2013 Jersey Clipper Bursary, worth £600.
In addition, an anonymous donation enabled the Jersey Clipper Bursary trustees to make a second award of £250 to another young sailor, 11-year-old Phoebe Le Marquand (left).
Elana, who has been sailing for seven years, used the bursary to help with the cost of training and competing outside the Island.
Since receiving the award she has won the 2013 St Catherine's Sailing Club Junior Championship and several other club events, competed in the Lymington Optimist Open and assisted in teaching local youngsters to learn and enjoy the sport.
She also passed her RYA Power Boat 2 qualification, which is necessary to be able to start a sailing instructor's course.
Phoebe also used her award to assist with the travelling costs involved in training in the UK. By the end of the year she was ranked 56th overall – and second junior girl aged 12 and under – in the Optimist Class national rankings
In October she came sixth at the Burghfield SC Regatta, attended by over 70 sailors, and at the Winter Championships at Datchet Water in November she came 38th, securing an invitation to join the GBR team at the Irish Nationals this summer as a top junior.
She is also planning to attend the biggest international single class regatta in the world on Lake Garda in late April, which usually has one thousand Optimist Class sailors taking part.
