LAW firm Benest Corbett Renouf has teamed up with the market-leading London firm Farrer & Co to present a safeguarding conference. The event, “Creating Safer Organisations”, will take place on Thursday, 15th June in Jersey.

Partner and Head of Family Law, Barbara Corbett, will join Farrer & Co’s leading team of child protection lawyers to highlight the need for organisations to both protect children from risks and safeguard themselves. The event will also feature case studies.

Barbara said:  “In advance of the publication of the final report from the Jersey Independent Care Inquiry on 3rd July 2017, it is timely to reinforce to all organisations working with children the need for them to have in place robust safeguarding policies and procedures and a best practice culture, to protect both the children they work with and the risk to their organisation. We are pleased to be able to consider these essential issues with the excellent team from Farrer & Co.”

David Smellie, who leads Farrer & Co’s Child Protection Unit, said: “Post Savile, we have seen repeated failures in safeguarding emerge in churches, schools, sport, charities, and with respect to children in care. Never has a more powerful light been shone on safeguarding and child protection, and never has a higher level of expectation been placed on institutions to provide the safest possible environment for children.”

He added: “The Farrer & Co Child Protection Unit guides and advises organisations either working or coming into contact with children. That means schools,, residential and day care, higher education, charities, museums and visitor attractions, government and local government, sports clubs and organisations, youth organisations, summer schools, travel operators, the media and entertainment industries, the health sector, and also any organisation which provides work experience to, or is involved in, mentoring or charitable activities with children.”

Barbara and David will be joined by two other experienced lawyers from Farrer & Co, Maria Strauss and Adele Eastman, for the event next month. Both Adele and Maria specialise in safeguarding and child protection matters, including non-recent claims. Both are heavily involved in advising the education and sport sectors, and Maria has a particular focus on religious organisations and Adele on not for profit organisations.

Creating Safer Organisations will take place from 1.30pm – 6.00pm in The Golden Room at The Hotel de France on Thursday 15th June, 2017. It will be followed by a drinks reception. Tickets are £35.00 each and may be reserved on Eventbrite, or by calling 760862.  Discounts are available for charities.
