Jersey’s first ever stroke conference bringing together all the organisations which support stroke survivors and carers on the island will take place on Thursday (29 June).

Representatives from the health services, social care, charities and social enterprise will meet to share ideas and information and look at ways to work even more closely in future.

The conference has been organised by the Stroke Association, a charity which helps stroke survivors and carers rebuild their lives after stroke.

Jacqui Cuthbert, the charity’s associate director for the South West and Channel Islands, said: “Stroke causes around 30 deaths in Jersey every year and there are almost 1,800 stroke survivors living on the island.

“The consequences of stroke are life changing and often devastating - two thirds of stroke survivors leave hospital with a disability.  But Jersey has some very talented and dedicated individuals and organisations who are determined to do their very best to treat stroke and help people live their best possible lives after stroke.

“The conference will bring together people from across the ‘stroke pathway’, from acute services in hospital through to rehab, recovery and support. This includes doctors and nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists, speech and language therapists, social workers, and charities.

“We’re especially grateful that two stroke survivors have agreed to come along and share their personal experiences.

“We will also hear updates on some of the latest research into stroke and stroke care.”

The conference, which takes place at the General Hospital, will be attended by politicians including Chief Minister Kristina Moore and Assistant Minister for Health and Social Services Rose Binet.

The Stroke Association’s Jersey Stroke Recovery Service supports stroke survivors, families and carers of people affected by stroke in the Island and can be contacted on 07829 845086. The charity’s website www.stroke.org.uk also has a huge amount of helpful information.
