Family Mediation Week

MEDIA RELEASE: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and not Bailiwick Express, and the text is reproduced exactly as supplied to us

December and January can be challenging for families with expectations being high and finances being stretched. It is the infamous week that Blue Monday hits and people are feeling vulnerable and unsupported.

Family Mediation Week aims to give people information about mediation as a way to navigate various issues. Mediation can benefit people and assist in avoiding court. It can also help people feel heard and respected.

What is Family Mediation Week?

Family Mediation Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of family mediation and of the benefits it can bring to separating families. The aim is to let more people know about the benefits of family mediation and encourage separating couples to think about family mediation as a way of helping them take control, make decisions together and build a positive future for their family.

What happens during Family Mediation Week?

Over the course of the Family Mediation Week, the Family Mediation Council present webinars, publish resources, information, blog posts and issue news stories to local, regional and national media explaining the benefits of mediation.

There is a list of events available to the public here: www.familymediationcouncil.org.uk/family-mediation-week-events-for-the-public

What mediation options are there in Jersey?

There are two mediation organisations in Jersey: Family Mediation Jersey, their website is www.fmj.je and The Resolution Centre whose website is www.theresolutioncentre.com.

In mediation the parties meet with the mediator who helps them to reach their own agreement. The mediator does not give legal advice but can provide general information. There are two main models of mediation: without lawyers, where mediation generally takes place over several sessions of around 90 minutes or with lawyers where typically the mediation is set up for most of a day and everyone concentrates on getting to a settlement. The advantages of this are that it gets done quickly, hopefully all in a day. The disadvantage is that for some people that may be too quick and the lawyers have to be paid as well as the mediator.

Corbett Le Quesne can advise you on the most appropriate type of mediation for you and your circumstances. Barbara Corbett, Senior Partner at Corbett Le Quesne, is a fully qualified mediator and can conduct mediations through her office. Barbara offers free 30 minute information sessions if you want to speak to her or one of their other family lawyers call 733030 or email enquiries@corbettlequesne.com.
