Whether you’re a complete novice looking to get on the water for the first time, or an ‘old hand’ wanting to get back into boating, St Helier Yacht Club’s ‘Let’s Get Afloat’ meeting could be the perfect answer.

This informal gathering – to be held at the club’s South Pier premises at 6pm on Wednesday 14 March – will give everyone the chance to meet in a social setting, and members will be on hand to answer questions about getting involved.

A short presentation will brief participants on planned club activities, including racing and cruising as well as the club’s Social Sailing evenings. These evenings provide a great opportunity for Islanders of all ages and abilities to gain experience on the water, meet skippers they may be able to crew for and see if boating and the club’s activities might be for them.

‘Whether you’re interested in crewing on a boat for the first time, new to the Island and keen to get involved, have a boat that you would like to make more use of or are an experienced skipper looking for new crew, we would love to see you on the 14th,’ said Sailing Committee member Laurence Curtis.

‘Last year’s inaugural Social Sailing programme was a great success, involving over 50 people many of whom had not sailed before.’

Club members provided their boats, ranging from 23 to 40 feet in length, giving the participants the opportunity to experience sailing in a variety of weather conditions over seven sessions held during the course of the season.

Some went on to join the club, several became regular crew for existing club members, and one team of novices aboard Julian Rogers’ yacht Quicksilver even went on to win their class in the RCIYC Beer Race series.

‘The meeting on the 14th will outline what the club offers, highlight the opportunities for getting involved, enable skippers to meet potential crew members, and let attendees know how to register their interest for future events’ added Laurence.

‘After that we will be able to keep them posted of events on the water, giving everyone involved the chance to make the most of the great boating experiences to be found in local waters.’
