Students in Jersey starting a degree at university this year have just a few weeks left to apply for a bursary being offered by the Jersey Society of Chartered and Certified Accountants (JSCCA).
Now in its seventh year, the JSCCA Bursary, valued at a total of up to £5,000 each year for the relevant years of study, is designed to help students from Jersey attend university to pursue an undergraduate degree of their choice, before returning to the island and considering a career in accountancy.
At a time when the financial commitment of funding a university degree education is becoming increasingly challenging to many local families, the JSCCA runs the Bursary Scheme to help bright committed students have the choice of studying for a degree.

“Accountancy higher apprenticeships have increased significantly in popularity for both employers and students. Whilst these on-island routes to an accountancy career are excellent opportunities, JSCCA also sees a degree education continuing to offer significant value to students in terms of both academic and intellectual education, and building cultural and global awareness, essential in today’s working environment. Our aim is to help prevent local students’ career options being narrowed by financial cost.”
Launched for the first time in September 2010, recipients of the bursary have been assisted with the cost of university courses within and beyond business and finance. Last year, the main JSCCA Bursary was awarded to Angus Sugden who now studies Economics and Finance at Herriot-Watt University. Bradley Rose and Victoria Surcouf also received smaller bursary awards last year and are respectively studying Business and Management at University of Exeter and Business and Accountancy & Economics at Worcester University.

We are keen to help ensure that Jersey's potential future business leaders have the opportunity to pursue their academic interests and fulfil their potential. The combination of the bursary award and facilitation of paid work experience with a local employer during the holidays can significantly increase the accessibility of university education as an option for our local students, and open up opportunities in the local employment market for when the student returns to the island.”
The closing date for applications for the academic year beginning September 2017 is Monday 20th March 2017. Application forms can be downloaded from www.jscca.org, where potential applicants can also find out more about the JSCCA. The application process involves an initial screening process looking at predicted A-Level grades and a student's motivations to attend university before returning to the island to pursue a career in accountancy. A face to face interview then follows.
