Macmillan Jersey is launching a new campaign today with the help of Gary Burgess, hoping to get islanders to sign up and become regular givers to the local cancer support charity.
With the effects of the pandemic still being felt across the charities’ fundraising, regular giving allows Macmillan Jersey to financially forecast and forward plan.
With around 3,000 support sessions provided free-of-charge throughout the year, by donating frequently, islanders are ensuring these services are available for years to come.
“I know, from personal experience, how ongoing support from Macmillan Jersey can make such a difference. I also know that ongoing support from islanders in the form of regular donations can help with the charity’s work in a much more sustainable way," Mr Burgess, who retired from his role as a broadcast journalist last month to focus on his health due to a terminal cancer diagnosis, said.
The recently-named Community Champion added: “Whether a regular fiver or more, an ongoing donation to Macmillan Jersey can make a massive difference. That sustainable giving helps the charity plan for the future. And for people like me who use their services, it means this vital lifeline can operate with more certainty of its financial footing.
“The number of people who’ve spoken to me about how best they can support Macmillan Jersey is so heartening. I tell them a regular ongoing donation is the smartest move of all as it helps the charity plan ahead in a sustainable way. Whether a fiver a month or something more, every last penny makes a world of difference.”
For just £2 a month, donors can help provide refreshments to service users who visit The Oasis, Macmillan Jersey’s cancer support and wellbeing centre. £20 a month will enable them to provide complementary therapies to anyone affected by cancer. £50 a month provides a one-hour session with a Macmillan Jersey trained professional.
“We want to ensure that anyone affected by cancer in Jersey has access to the vital cancer support services we provide at Macmillan Jersey. We are a proud Jersey-based charity, and one that exists solely through islanders' generosity and support," Steph Gibaut, Head of Fundraising, explained.
"By donating money on a monthly basis, you are helping ensure we can continue to provide cancer support here in Jersey for many years to come. We would also like to encourage any corporate companies and/or local businesses to contact us to discuss payroll giving, and further strengthening our longevity as a local charity.”
Macmillan Jersey’s vision is to ensure that everybody affected by cancer in Jersey has access to emotional, practical and wellbeing support, through their preferred route of contact. This support should be delivered in a way that meets people's individual needs from diagnosis and beyond, and from whichever source is best placed.
As the charity doesn’t receive any funding from Macmillan UK, it relies heavily on the continued support of the generous local public through donations.
