The Glass Rainbow Trust is dedicated to preserving the memory of Henry Thomas Bosdet who was a prolific designer of stained glass windows in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He who was born in St Helier in 1856 and in 1883 was appointed Curator of the Life School at the Royal Academy where he sought inspiration from and was well acquainted with fellow Jerseyman, Sir John Everett Millais RA.
Examples of Bosdet’s work in Jersey are eight windows in St Brelade’s Church, three in the adjoinung Fishermen’s Chapel illustrating the life of St Brendan, the Last Supper in St Lawrence Church, the Annunciation in the Town Church, the Wedding Feast at Cana in St Aubin on the Hill, and the Reredos in St Saviour’s Church. There are also windows by Bosdet in St Andrew’s Church, St Mary’s Church, St John’s Church, St Luke’s Church and Gouray Church. His windows at St Ouen’s Manor illustrate heraldically the history of the de Carteret family and are the only known examples of his work which are secular.
And it was at St Ouen’s Manor that a website, devoted to this highly creative Jerseyman and his works and created by webdesigner Tom Brossman was launched to an appreciative invited audience.
As well as showing many examples of his work, the website also illustrates Bosdet’s mode of working from the first drawings and watercolours through to the final full-size cartoons prepared for the stained glass window makers. The website also lists the location of all of Bosdet’s windows in England and overseas currently know to the Trust and it is hoped that the website mightbe the means of discovering others.
The event was generously hosted by Charles Malet de Carteret who is a patron of the Trust.
