JT is pleased to announce that it has finished its fibre-optic cable laying work in the Rohais two weeks ahead of schedule. The new fibre-optic network is part of a significant investment in the island at a time when the existing infrastructure is struggling to cope with modern demand.
The works which started on Friday 25th of October had been meticulously planned with businesses and residents in the area notified of the road closure. Managing Director for JT (Guernsey) Paul D. Taylor said: ‘We realise that the Rohais is a significant road, and I am delighted to say that our team has worked round the clock to get these vital works completed ahead of schedule so as to cause as little disruption as possible. Access to important sites such as Rohais Medical, St Pierre Park and Waitrose has been maintained throughout, and our teams have worked closely with businesses and the Public Services department to ensure everything went smoothly.
‘The teams put in long hours, around 62 hours a week, but it has meant that we are one step closer to completing this vital infrastructure which will provide our customers with a reliable and faster service. In addition, Guernsey Electric and the PSD were also able to complete some of their outstanding works during our closure period, which has meant the Rohais won’t need to be disturbed again for their projects.’
The fibre network will connect sites owned by the States of Guernsey and will pass around a quarter of Island homes and the majority of businesses, creating the option to connect at superfast broadband speeds. Guernsey’s existing network - which runs over copper wires – is owned by Sure, who were bought earlier this year by Batelco group, and who currently do not have any plans to invest in a fibre-optic ultra-fast broadband network to connect every home, as JT has done with their award-winning Gigabit project in Jersey.
Fibre-optic connections allow for more reliable and faster broadband services, enabling not just faster downloads of music, films and games, but also for Skype services, live streaming and ensuring multiple users on a single connection all have a positive user experience.
