Later this month Dr Paul Mills, Senior Economist with the International Monetary Fund will address business leaders at STIMULUS, Business Connect’s leadership forum.

At lunchtime on Tuesday 19th July Business Connect, a network of local business leaders which exists to ‘work for the common good of Jersey society in business and the public arena’, will host the next event their STIMULUS series of leadership CPD seminars entitled ‘The Great Financial Crisis – what is really going on, and how to fix it’ with Dr Paul Mills, who will be speaking in a personal capacity.

Dr Mills has worked extensively with the UK treasury where he led policy sections managing the UK government’s financial balance sheet. He joined the IMF in early 2006 and has worked on global financial stability; He now heads the IMF’s London office, focusing particularly on the euro area crisis, financial stability, and regulatory policy.

Dr Mills said “The Great Financial Crisis is rooted in 25 years of expanding leverage and financial globalization facilitated by naive deregulation. Yet policymakers mistook this long financial cycle for a fundamental supply side improvement. We have just embarked on a multi-decade period of deleveraging and retrenchment but don't wish to admit it, as we continue to fight a solvency crisis with liquidity tools. What are the implications for economies and the global financial system as balance sheets are gradually repaired? What should policymakers do to speed the healing process? These are some of the questions I will seek to address in this seminar”

The event is open to all though places are limited as the organisers are aiming for an intimate and interactive format. Dr Mill’s talk will be followed by a Q&A and CDP certificates will be issued to all attendees. Those wishing to attend should register their interest by visiting www.businessconnect.je
