Ladies’ College is the latest school to benefit from a donation of Raspberry Pi’s, the palm- sized computer that is at the heart of teaching computer programming to a new generation of school children.

Twenty Raspberry Pi’s were donated by systems integrator and software house, Fusion Systems, to the school, having already supported the success of the computer clubs at La Mare de Carteret, Les Beaucamps and St Sampson’s High Schools.  Alan Rowe, Director at Fusion Systems said: “If Guernsey is going to get on and ride the global digital wave, then we have to develop young people with the skills to be able to code and innovate with digital technologies. Raspberry Pi is one of the steps to making that happen. It is a simple and low cost device which makes it very accessible and easy to use.’

Andy Wade, Head of IT at Ladies’ College said: ‘With virtually all young people now having access to an electronic device, it is imperative we take them beyond thinking these devices are pre-programmed providers of information. How much more empowering is it to have the knowledge skills to actually build your own programmes? The donation of the Raspberry Pi’s has already proved a big hit and we already have girls designing 2D Computer games as part of the CGI IT Challenge.

We are extremely grateful to Fusion Systems for opening up this world of opportunity to our pupils.
