The Les Amis Commercial Recycling business will restart on 18 May by collecting waste cooking oil from local businesses for free to help them get up and running during Covid-19.

The recycling business, which employs some residents, had to temporarily suspend its service due to Covid-19 and will be operated by staff only to ensure the safety of residents. Only waste cooking oil will be collected rather than its full service of paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and aluminium cans due to not having the staff resources while the team continues doing weekly shops, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) deliveries and medication collections for residents.

The service benefits the local environment as well as the local economy to keep businesses running, which will in turn safeguard jobs for residents when it’s safe for them to return to work.

The Les Amis Recycling Service was introduced to support the island’s green agenda. The waste oil is filtered then shipped to the UK and sold for biofuel productions. From May 2018 through to the end of 2019, Les Amis’ Recycling Service collected 273,210 litres of waste vegetable oil, which equates to 251.3 metric tons.

Shaun Findlay, Managing Director of Les Amis, said: “With restrictions starting to ease as part of the government’s Safe Exit Framework, we would like to help local businesses get back on their feet by collecting their waste cooking oil for free during the pandemic. We would encourage any businesses that would benefit from this service to contact us directly. It’s important we all support one another in helping to rebuild during this crisis. In these challenging times, we need the continued support of islanders to provide a quality of life to our residents. We would like to thank islanders for their ongoing support.”
