His Excellency, Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd, and Dr. Kyd have become joint patrons of the Jersey Child Care Trust.

In their first official engagement with the local children’s charity on Monday 28th November 2022 , His Excellency and Dr Kyd presented The Wilma Allan Award to this year’s winner, Miss Sunny Hansford. The award recognises Miss Hansford’s outstanding practice as an Early Years Practitioner at Little Squirrel’s Nursery.

His Excellency said: “My wife and I are absolutely delighted to be joint Patrons at this most wonderful charity. Giving any child the best start in life is critical to future outcomes and the Jersey Child Care Trust (JCCT) delivers simply fantastic support to so many young children across the Island. Well done, JCCT and all their volunteers and support staff. Karen and I look forward to our future involvement as the charity continues to expand!”

Fiona Vacher, Executive Director of the Jersey Child Care Trust said: “This award is in its eighth year, recognising those who go above and beyond for children and their families. This prestigious award inspires our workforce and enables us to pause, notice and celebrate the nurture, care and learning opportunities that are created by our workforce, every day for children in our nurseries.”

His Excellency and Dr. Kyd presented Miss Hansford with her award at a reception attended by 60 guests at The Lido, which was sponsored by Ardent Chambers. Miss Hansford was nominated by Ms. Tracey Bunn, Manager at Little Squirrel’s Nursery, who said: “I felt very flattered to be nominated for this award by my manager and truly did not expect to win. Childcare has always been a strong passion of mine especially early years and I always try to make a positive impact on the children’s learning and development each day. I feel very honoured that the panel of judges selected me as the winner as I am sure all the other nominees were also deserving of this award”.

Miss Hansford’s Manager, Mrs Bunn said “I think the Wilma Allen Award is an important way to highlight the amazing work that Early Years Child Care practitioners carry out each day.  This area of expertise is often an undervalued profession.  However, it is an important part of society.  Early years settings enable families the opportunity to work each day, provide an inclusive environment for all children to thrive and develop as well as support parents with an abundance of advice and emotional support.

I would recommend other nursery manager to participate in these awards and will definitely consider nominating other members of the team in the future as it emphasises the fantastic work and dedication these qualified practitioners provide each and every day.”
