THE LOCAL CANCER RESEARCH UK committee in Jersey are delighted to announce that Cancer Research UK’s ‘Relay For Life’ will go ahead on Sunday 11 July, 10am – 2pm at FB Fields.
The committee are looking forward to seeing survivors, teams and friends at FB Fields for a BYO picnic event with everyone welcome to walk the track as part of the annual celebration of life, hope and remembrance for islanders affected by cancer.
The event is open to all and will start with a Zumba warm-up and opening lap led by Jennifer Seymour. Jen is a long-standing relay team captain and has recently finished a year-long fundraising challenge of running 5km every day. Jen will bring her boundless energy to the event as well as the offer of Zumba sessions and vibrant music to help motivate and entertain walkers. Regrettably, after a challenging year, the committee are unable to offer the music, entertainment and overnight camping that normally accompanies the event, but they are determined to make the day enjoyable and very much look forward to seeing everyone.
The popular ‘Childrens’ Lap’ will return and take place on the Sunday at 10.30am, where local children of any age are welcome to complete a lap of the track as part of the Relay gathering. Children need to register and are very welcome to raise sponsorship if they would like to.
COVID-19 has caused a devastating loss of research funding. Cancer Research UK is predicting a staggering £300 million drop in income over the next three years which could put future medical breakthroughs at risk.
Money raised through donations will help scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, helping to save more lives.
Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work relies on the public’s generous support. Cancer hasn’t stopped because of the pandemic and Relay members are calling on the people of Jersey to give their support today to help save lives tomorrow.
Alison Hand, Event Chair of Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life in Jersey, said: “Relay teams fundraise throughout the year and come together to celebrate and remember at the summer event.
As for all charities, the last year has been an incredibly difficult time for Cancer Research UK, with the cancellation of the majority of its larger-scale fundraising events. However, the committee are determined to run a gathering this year, so that teams and friends can come together and to unite against cancer.”
Ali continued: “One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives. Fundraising for Relay For Life is about being part of a community united in the belief that it can make a difference. Cancer Research UK needs everyone in Jersey to act right now.”

The Jersey Committee is looking forward our 2021 event with renewed energy and we are asking the public to get behind us by fundraising in imaginative ways.”
