With 70 days to go until the anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen’s coronation ceremony held on 2nd June 1953, St. George’s pupils have launched their celebratory, whole-school ‘70 Good Deeds’ community project.
Ahead of the forthcoming Jubilee Celebration long weekend (taking place from 2nd-5th June), pupils will be completing 70 good deeds for the benefit of as many people as possible across the island.
Planned projects include volunteer days at local charities, running a ‘Resilience Day’ at school for younger pupils, inviting community groups into the school grounds to make use of the facilities and explore the forest school area, writing thank you letters to key workers, creating special ‘Appreciation Days’ for members of the school community, painting a kindness-themed mural, writing a special book about our values and holding various charity events to raise money for good causes.

Every pupil will take part, and the 70 deeds will span from smaller-scale operations such as beach cleans, the sharing of uplifting notes and holding ‘Super Smiley Days’ where we smile especially widely at everyone we meet all day to more logistically demanding charity and community-focussed endeavours. The common thread is that pupils will be thinking of others throughout the projects and, in doing so, celebrating The Queen’s admirable commitment and long reign.

Headmaster of St. George’s, Cormac Timothy, has this to say:
‘The Jubilee is a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate after a time of significant disruption and necessary restriction. When discussing how we would mark the milestone, the children were clear that they want our celebrations to create a positive legacy for the school and reach out into the community as far as possible. This felt very much in the spirit of Her Majesty The Queen, who has devoted so many years of service to us all. 70 Good Deeds is a perfect embodiment of our school values of kindness, resilience, achievement and responsibility. Pupils themselves will suggest and organise their good deeds with the help and support of their form tutors, and we will be reaching out to community groups in the coming weeks.
'In the meantime, if there are any groups that think they could make use of our grounds as we move into spring and summer, I urge them to get in touch. We want to look back at this project with pride, knowing that we did good things that truly benefitted others and had a lasting effect, as well as allowing us to work together with our classmates and fellow pupils which is something we’ve all missed very much.’
