Strategic Airlink – Gatwick Airport

MEDIA RELEASE: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and not Bailiwick Express, and the text is reproduced exactly as supplied to us

The Chamber of Commerce believes that connectivity to Gatwick is of paramount importance for the Island. Business needs to be confident that any service is affordable, reliable, frequent and secure. Historically, there has been overcapacity on the Gatwick route which has threatened these key operating criteria. Chamber is aware that EasyJet have applied for a route licence, which we believe to be for the Gatwick route, but we cannot comment specifically on the T&R statement as the details of the application are not yet in the public domain. In consideration of a formal response, and once full details of the application are known, we will comment specifically in the context of the key quality criteria as well as in the interests of the island as a whole.

Chamber does have concerns that the application of the proposed amendments by T&R to the existing route policy may have adverse consequences on future applications by potential operators on other routes. This may endanger Guernseys future connectivity.

It is unfortunate that the proposal by T&R has come at this time, rather than being included in the States business under consideration last July, when they were discussing acting as guarantor for the purchase of new aircraft.
