The Sure Big Screen at Cobo attracted record crowds this year as people embraced the varied weather to enjoy a range of blockbuster hits, cult classics and family favourites.

This was the second year that the event has been held in July to coincide with the beginning of the school holidays and this year featured children’s TV programmes on the Saturday and Sunday mornings of the event to appeal to all the family.

It is estimated that more than 800 people attended the busiest screenings and the most popular films this year were Sing, Beauty & the Beast, La La Land and The LEGO Batman Movie.

The ever-popular superhero day returned with a range of prizes for children who dressed up as their favourite superhero and a special family-friendly day featured bouncy castles, the balloon man and Le Hechet Farm ice-creams.

A special prize of a 32” Smart TV was also up for grabs for those who posted a selfie at the Sure Big Screen on social media using the #SureBigScreen. The winner of the giveaway was announced on Sure’s Facebook and the delighted recipient; Emily Mechem has already gifted this to her very grateful sister who did not have a TV.

Sure’s PR and marketing manager, Jess Mauger, thanked all those who attended and praised the hardy individuals who braved some of the wetter screenings across the week.

“We had some very varied weather this year but people really embraced that and we had one screening in the rain where people brought along umbrellas, rain macs and even a tent for their children to sit in,” said Mrs Mauger.

“There’s a real carnival atmosphere down at the Big Screen and it’s such a pleasure to run an event like this for locals and visitors alike. It brings something a little different to the Guernsey summer and is one of Sure’s ways of giving back to the community.”
