Butterfield is providing vital support for the Christmas lights on the Bridge in Guernsey.

This year’s lights were switched on by Father Christmas on Friday 1 December, with the cost largely met by local traders on the Bridge. Organisers also look to make improvements regularly, but face high overheads.

Butterfield has now stepped in to provide funding that will make a difference, and keep families smiling into the future.

‘Every year it costs the Bridge community approximately £3,000 to stage the lights. This doesn’t allow for the many man hours donated. Every other year we try to make improvements, but struggle. Butterfield’s donation will allow us, at a later stage, to replace the harbour lights,’ said Martin Search, who has coordinated organisation of the Bridge lights for 25 years.

The lights are turned on at the start of December because to coincide with the traditional start of Christmas celebrations locally.

‘It’s most important for the community to keep the festive spirit alive as it’s about our future and when you see the smiles on the children’s faces, you’d give anything. I’d like to say a big thank you to Butterfield,’ added Mr Search.

This is the second year Butterfield has helped fund Christmas lights in Guernsey having backed the St Peter Port lights in 2016.

‘It’s an absolute pleasure for Butterfield to support the cost of the Christmas lights on the Bridge because it helps spread some festive cheer. I’d also like to pay tribute to volunteers, like Martin Search, who ensure we have lights to enjoy year after year,’ said Paul Ingrouille, head of client services at Butterfield Trust (Guernsey) Limited.
