Growing up online can be a daunting experience, especially for concerned parents who struggle to get to grips with today’s young, cyber-savvy generation.
Here in Guernsey, the HUB have responded to these continuing concerns by hosting another informative advice session today, to provide invaluable insight into everything children encounter online growing up in Guernsey. Content covered will range from how exposed children might be to online bullies, to what the long-term implications of sharing images and videos online might be.
This is the third in a series of important talks which PwC Channel Islands, recently awarded the Corporate Social Responsibility award at the Guernsey Community Foundation awards, is sponsoring on the Island, in collaboration with the HUB. The first such event took place this time last year and also tackled this daunting topic. The second talk was held in March and covered the subject of children’s emotional wellbeing.
Due to the feedback gathered after these events, the HUB will provide an even deeper delve into the topic of online safety later this week, examining what children encounter via social media, and how best to protect them when it comes to potential dangers such as online bullying, sexual exploitation and even radicalisation. Content covered will be different from last year’s online session, but it's clear from the high volume of requests received, that parents and guardians would really appreciate more support in terms of understanding both the positive and negative impacts of social media and the influence the online world can have on their children.
The advice session will take place on today at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts, starting at 7.00pm with a talk by subject matter expert Adam Burroughs. This will be followed by drinks and snacks and a great opportunity to talk directly with three online safety expert panellists who will be in attendance on the evening.
