Local architectural design practice PF+A, in association with Home-Start Guernsey, are calling on golfers of any standard to take part in the second “Drive to St Andrews” challenge.

Following the success of last year’s event, the charity golf drive will be held during the evening of Wednesday 10 June at the Royal Guernsey Golf Club’s driving range.
Teams of four will be challenged to hit a combined total of 3,589 balls equalling a distance of roughly 1,000km (621 miles) - the equivalent distance from Guernsey to the famous home of golf in St Andrews, Scotland.

Organised by John Hibbs, director of strategy at PF+A, the event will start at 6 pm and is expected to finish around 9 pm followed by a buffet dinner and presentations.

Mr Hibbs said: “After last year’s event, which took place over a whole day, we realised that we only needed a couple of hours for our competitors to complete the challenge. Our winners last year were on top of their game and finished in two hours, hitting almost 30 balls a minute.

“The competition is open to golfers of any level and this year we’re hoping to get some of the junior golfers to come down and join in.”

The challenge will culminate in a presentation to the winning team and a cheque handover to PF+A’s chosen charity, Home Start Guernsey.

Prizes will also be awarded for second and third positions as well as to the team who has managed to raise the most amount of sponsorship.

Margaret Spaargaren, chair of Home-Start in Guernsey, said: “This event is a great opportunity for us to raise vital funds to train our volunteers and spread the word of our charity. John and the team from PF+A do a fantastic job of organising the event and we are very grateful to the RGGC who let us use its driving range.”

Teams should be comprised of four people and each person is asked to provide a minimum sponsorship of £35.89 which includes the dinner provided.
