Students at Le Murier School have been raising money to purchase vital medical equipment for Herm Island as part of their Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award.
This weekend the students and their parents, along with staff from Le Murier, will be at the top of the inter-island quay ramp raising money for a dedicated defibrillator for the residents of Herm. The school has 45 students who have signed up for the DofE Award. Here they get involved in a programme of activities specifically designed to support their personal development. As part of their bronze and silver award, the students have tasked themselves with raising funds for the purchase of a defibrillator for Herm Island.
As well as organising collections from the general public, the students have been undertaking a series of fund raising activities included selling jacket potatoes during their lunch hour, running the school’s tuck shop and car washing sessions.
The school is able to take part in the DofE Award thanks to the Ana Leaf Foundation who has provided funding to buy some essential equipment. The foundation aims to provide support and opportunities through a variety of charities and organisations for young people across the Channel Islands.
Gary Dovey, offsite and outdoor education co-ordinator at Le Murier School, said: “The Award is a chance for our students to develop key skills in areas such as volunteering, physical challenges, skill based projects and expedition activities.
“The funding that Ana Leaf Foundation has given us has enabled us to give our students the opportunity to expand their horizons and help them develop their independence, communication and living skills.”
