Leading figures from the Hong Kong and Guernsey financial services sectors will form the panel at a launch event to mark the opening of a Guernsey representative office in Hong Kong.

John Wong, Tax Partner and Hong Kong & China National Leader at PwC, and Andrew Chan, Head of Trust and Fiduciary Services for the Greater China region at Standard Chartered, will be joined as panellists by William Mason, Director General of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC), and Guernsey practitioners Marcus Leese, Partner of offshore law firm Ogier, and Mark Huntley, Managing Director of Heritage International Fund Managers.

Taking place at The China Club in Central on Wednesday 2 March, the event will focus on the current economic climate and the services offered by Guernsey’s international finance centre. As previously confirmed, the panel session will be moderated by Hong Kong current affairs commentator and host of TVB’s Straight Talk, Michael Chugani.

The event will also include keynote speeches from the Lord Flight, a member of the House of Lords and a former UK MP and Shadow Cabinet Minister, and Lyndon Trott, Chairman of Guernsey Finance and former Chief Minister of Guernsey.

Guernsey Finance Chief Executive Dominic Wheatley said: “We are delighted to have secured John and Andrew on our panel of experts. They are leaders in their respective fields and will be able to share with us their experience and knowledge of the markets of Hong Kong and wider South East Asia. Alongside our Guernsey panellists it promises to be a fascinating discussion at what is a particularly interesting time in the Asian financial markets.”

The seminar is the culmination of a series of events in Hong Kong to mark the office launch and follows a VIP drinks reception the previous evening hosted by Caroline Wilson, British Consul General to Hong Kong, and Guernsey’s Commerce and Employment Minister Kevin Stewart.

The Guernsey office, which is located at Three Pacific Place in Admiralty, will be run by Guernsey Finance. The office is the promotional agency’s second overseas outpost, following its Shanghai office which opened in 2008.

Guernsey Finance China Representative, Wendy Weng, who is based in Shanghai, and Kate Clouston, Guernsey Finance’s Director of International Business Development, will use the office as a base from which to carry out further promotional activities concentrated on the wider South East Asian market. It will also be utilised by the GFSC to provide regulatory advice to those in the region who might be considering Guernsey-specific ventures. The GFSC’s John Dunford has relocated to Hong Kong to act as the regulator’s representative and will use his extensive technical knowledge and expertise to give guidance to law firms, other professionals and their clients on how Guernsey's high regulatory standards are applied.
