The Presidents of the island’s two Rotary Clubs believe in leading by example. Brian Acton and Katie Court have both signed up to take on the challenge of this year’s Saffery Rotary Walk which will be held on Saturday 3 June.
The Rotary Club presidents will join members of staff from the walks main sponsor, Saffery Champness, who are also taking on the 39 mile challenge. Not only does Saffery Champness provide sponsorship funds that enable the walk to take place, they are also heavily involved in the walk and committed to raising as much money as possible for the 28 chosen charities.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the walk and Saffery Champness is proud to be celebrating its 40th anniversary alongside the walk.
Mr Acton said: “It is a privilege to be able to show my support for the walk and help raise money for so many worthy causes. Walking 39 miles around the island will be one of the biggest challenges I have ever undertaken and I am determined to complete the course.”
Mrs Court said: “This will be my third time doing the walk, knowing that all of the money raised will be staying on island helping local causes is the perfect incentive to try to raise as much sponsorship as possible. The chosen charitable projects do such important work for islanders and it’s great to be able to support them in their activities.”
Compliance director at Saffery Champness, Allison Brouard, will be taking on the challenge as part of a team.
Mrs Brouard said: “The relay option is a great alternative for those who wish to take part in the event but don’t want to walk the full 39 miles. With distances varying between 4.3 and 7.8 miles there really is a stretch that will suit any ability of walker.”
Director at Saffery Champness and head of the firm’s CSR activity, Lisa Vizia, said: “Saffery Champness is proud to be able to support an event which makes such a difference to the lives of so many islanders. It’s great to be able to celebrate our 40th anniversary alongside the walk’s 20th and we are determined to make this year its best yet.”
Over 650 people participated in last year’s walk raising £57,526 for the 18 charities chosen to receive a portion of the funds.
Chair of the Saffery Rotary Walk Simon Milsted said: “We are pleased that our two Rotary Presidents are joining the Lieutenant Governor, Sir Ian Corder, and Lady Corder in leading from the front and encouraging as many people as possible to sign up for this year’s walk.
“We are hoping that their participation in the walk will inspire others to take on the challenge. It would be fantastic if we could improve on last year’s number of entrants and the sponsorship money raised, making it a record breaking walk for its 20th anniversary.”
To acknowledge their commitment, the Rotary Clubs’ presidents will be given specially allocated walker identification numbers 5 and 6 respectively.
The Saffery Rotary Walk takes place on Saturday 3 June and organisers are calling for walkers or relay teams of between four and seven to sign up now at: www.safferyrotarywalk.com.
