Two hundred runners wearing decorated y-fronts have raised more than £3,000 for Les Bourgs Hospice and This is EPIC.

Last year’s inaugural Y-Front Run, organised by EPIC Challenges, saw more than 150 people run the 10km route from Pembroke to Town. This year’s event, which was sponsored by First Names Group, saw a shorter route added and 200 runners raising £3,200 for charity. More than £450 was raised through the sale of decorated and plain y-fronts by lingerie store Cockadoodle.

‘It never ceases to amaze us just how keen people are to put on men’s underwear and take part in a charity run. The effort people went to was fantastic and it was quite a sight when everyone set off together from Pembroke,’ said EPIC Challenges co-founder Warren Mauger.

‘First Names Group embraced the whole concept, entering a team, providing helpers to do registration and a number of marshals and were supported by representatives from the charities. That makes an enormous difference and helps the event run smoothly and also ensures that all of the money raised goes directly to the charities.’

This is EPIC, which aims to transform the lives of those living in Africa through savings and loans projects, said £1,600 would be used to start three more village savings and loan groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

‘This is literally a life-changing sum of money and will help empower people living in this war-torn country and give them the opportunity for a better life. With this amount of money, This is EPIC can help 90 individuals which will indirectly, through their family members, benefit more than 475 people,’ said This is EPIC founder Louise Smith.

Les Bourg Hospice fundraising administrator Trish De Carteret said the money raised through the First Names Group Y-Front Run would cover the costs of running the day hospice for two months.

‘The day hospice provides an essential and invaluable service to those with life-limiting illnesses who are well enough to remain in their own homes. It gives them a break, allows them to mix with other people, be entertained and importantly offers their loved ones some respite. Every year, hundreds of people use the day hospice and so this money is very much appreciated,’ said Mrs De Carteret.

Sharon McMillan, Operations Director of First Names Group Guernsey, said it had been a fantastic event to be involved with.

‘The First Names Group Y-Front Run has to be the most fun of Guernsey’s charity runs.
There were y-fronts adorned with all manner of decorations from balloons and bells to stars and sequins and even some very brave runners who just ran in their y-fronts. All of our ‘First Names’ really enjoyed being a part of the event and we are delighted that two very worthy charities have benefited.’
