Trackers have introduced the apprenticeship in response to the skills shortage in the construction and civil engineering industry. Research by the Channel Island Group of Professional Engineers (CIGPE) found that it has been difficult for local firms to recruit islanders with the right skills to meet their needs. Through the new course, students will learn from industry professionals and will gain practical experience to give them the skills for a successful civil engineering career. They will also receive support and mentoring from the Trackers team.
Ross Edgar, manager of the Trackers programme, said: “We have worked on this apprenticeship together with the construction industry to help address the civil engineering skills gap. We are really excited about the new apprenticeship; it will equip students with the skills needed for a career in engineering and it will therefore help employers to recruit more local employees.”
Darren Sowney, Chairman of CIGPE, encouraged islanders to consider the apprenticeship. He said: “It is fantastic for our industry that islanders can now study to become civil engineers in Jersey. A career in civil engineering is interesting and rewarding and I would encourage anyone who is undecided on their career path to explore what civil engineering is all about.”
The States of Jersey will cover up to 75% of the cost of the course and the employers will cover the remaining amount. Apprentices will not need to pay anything to take part in the course.
Those who successfully complete the course will earn a Higher National Certificate in civil engineering and will have the opportunity to progress to a civil engineering degree.
